Campus SummaryTOP

The Fashion Institute of Technology opened its doors in 1944 to 100 students studying Design and Scientific Management. Today, 11,000 full- and part-time students are offered undergraduate study in 35 majors in art and design, business and technology. The college’s commitment to career-focused education is still at the heart of its mission, and students graduate with an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree with the skills necessary to compete in a global marketplace.

FIT’s location on Seventh Avenue and 27th Street in New York City provides students with internship and networking opportunities, and its faculty, consisting largely of working professionals, offer students direct access to cutting-edge industry trends. Fashion Design students have their work critiqued by some of the foremost leaders in their field, including Geoffrey Beene and FIT alumnus Calvin Klein. Weekly guest lectures by industry legends such as designers Oscar de la Renta and Anna Sui, interior designer John Saladino, and Jerome Chazen, former chairman of Liz Claiborne, Inc., are open to all students. The campus itself is a microcosm of the industry it serves, with such state-of-the-art facilities as the Peter G. Scotese Computer-Aided Design and Communications Center, and The Museum at FIT, the repository of one of the world’s largest collections of costumes, textiles, and accessories. More than 20 percent of the full-time student population lives in three on-campus dormitories.

Unique/Special ProgramsTOP

FIT’s close relationship with industry means that the programs and curricula are created in response to the needs of the market. In addition to studying all facets of the fashion industry from Fashion Design to Fashion Merchandising Management, students can major in such related areas as Advertising and Marketing Communications, International Trade and Marketing for the Fashion Industries, and Advertising, Graphic, or Interior Design, to name a few. Programs such as Toy Design, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, Home Products Development and Marketing, and Direct Marketing benefit from close ties to their respective industries.

Students from all majors take part in national and international competitions that help them build their portfolios and resumes, network with professionals, and gain exposure in the industry. Students can also participate in FIT’s extensive study abroad program, including earning the AAS and BFA in Fashion Design studying for one or two years in Polimoda in Florence, Italy. Graduating students benefit from FIT’s Office of Career Services, which places 90 percent of graduates in their chosen fields.
