Campus SummaryTOP

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, commonly referred to as Cal Poly Pomona, has a distinguished history with its origin as a private school. Two national icons, Charles B. Voorhis, a prominent automotive industry figure, and William K. Kellogg, a cereal magnate, contributed to the University becoming one of the nation’s top institutions of higher education. Their legacies are evident today in the University’s mission statement, vision, and goals.

In 1928, retired automotive executive Charles B. Voorhis founded the Voorhis School for Boys in San Dimas, California, a college for homeless young men. Making the welfare of others his primary concern, Voorhis donated over $3 million to religious, educational, and charitable institutions. In 1938, the school was acquired by the state of California and became known as the Voorhis Unit of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In 1949, the Voorhis Unit obtained the 377-acre Arabian horse ranch of breakfast-food millionaire, W. K. Kellogg. A stipulation in maintaining the property is that the University continues the tradition of a Sunday Arabian horse show, so Cal Poly Pomona students host public performances on the first Sunday from October through May.

Cal Poly Pomona is a four-year, comprehensive university. The university's mission: To advance learning and knowledge by linking theory and practice in all disciplines, and to prepare students for lifelong learning, leadership and careers in a changing, multicultural world.

As one of only nine polytechnic universities nationwide, Cal Poly Pomona's hallmark is its learn-by-doing philosophy, directly stemming from its polytechnic mission. By blending theory and practice in all its disciplines, the university recognizes that the students solving classroom problems today will be the employees solving the real-world problems tomorrow. Students are afforded opportunities to apply their knowledge in hands-on projects, collaborate with faculty members on research, and participate in valuable internships and service-learning programs.

Cal Poly Pomona’s location is ideal for so many things, including studying, social and cultural activities, and recreation. Located just 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the heart of sunny Southern California, Cal Poly Pomona offers the peace and serenity of a small community as well as the glamour and excitement of a cultural mecca.

Want to climb a mountain, or play in the surf? Ski the slopes, or romp through Disneyland? Or maybe you want to wander through art museums or experience the sights and sounds of downtown Los Angeles or Orange County. All of these things, and many more, are just a short drive away. Our location is also ideal for internships or employment during school and after graduation because we are conveniently located near business and industry.
