Description

Direct activities such as autopsies, pathological and toxicological analyses, and inquests relating to the investigation of deaths occurring within a legal jurisdiction to determine cause of death or to fix responsibility for accidental, violent, or unexplained deaths.

Experience

A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.

Education

Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.

Training

Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.

Tasks

  • Directs activities of physicians and technologists conducting autopsies and pathological and toxicological analyses to determine cause of death.
  • Directs investigations into circumstances of deaths to fix responsibility for accidental, violent, or unexplained death.
  • Confers with officials of public health and law enforcement agencies to coordinate interdepartmental activities.
  • Directs activities of workers involved in preparing documents for permanent records.
  • Coordinates activities for disposition of unclaimed corpse and personal effects of deceased.
  • Testifies at inquests, hearings, and court trials.
  • Provides information concerning death circumstance to relatives of deceased.
